UPWARDS Summer Intensive Strengthens U.S.–Japan Collaboration in Semiconductor Education

January 27, 2026

“This experience undoubtedly served as a milestone in my personal and academic growth. I am determined to continue learning and to build my career as both a researcher and a woman in science.” – 2025 student participant

In August 2025, the University of Washington (UW) hosted the U.S.-Japan University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research & Development in Semiconductors (UPWARDS) for the Future Summer Intensive. The UW, five other U.S. universities, and six Japanese universities are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Micron, and Tokyo Electron (TEL) to lead UPWARDS with the mission of developing semiconductor talent and expanding cutting-edge research. The Summer Intensive at UW is an immersive educational experience designed to prepare the next generation of semiconductor leaders.

The one-week program brought together 11 undergraduate and graduate students from UPWARDS’ U.S. and Japanese partner universities to explore advanced semiconductor research, manufacturing processes, and global career pathways. The Japanese students were selected from Hiroshima University, Kyushu University, Nagoya University, Institute of Science Tokyo, and Tohoku University. Through a combination of technical instruction, lab experiences in the Washington Nanofabrication Facility, and guest lectures from UW engineering faculty members, participants gained firsthand insight into the collaborative ecosystem driving innovation and cutting-edge research in the semiconductor industry. Students also engaged directly with industry leaders from Micron Technology and Tokyo Electron, gaining valuable perspectives on workforce needs and emerging trends in semiconductor technology.

Two teachers from Washington’s Northwest Indian College and two teachers from Whatcom Community College also participated through a UW Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program. Beyond technical training, the program emphasized cross-cultural collaboration and global awareness, and international leadership skills. Local Seattle experiential activities gave students the opportunity to build relationships beyond the classroom and lab.

“This program helped me understand the significance of international collaboration in research. It made me aware that advancing my expertise while connecting with other fields and building an international network is essential for expanding academic opportunities and shaping a career in research.” – 2025 Student Participant

Building on the success of this year’s Summer Intensive, UPWARDS plans to continue expanding experiential learning opportunities for students across its network through future exchanges, workshops, and industry-engaged programming. More information about student opportunities can be found here.
